Partial Dentures

Tooth loss can occur for a variety of reasons from dental decay, disease or trauma. When one or more teeth are lost, partial dentures are a wonderful solution as long as there are healthy teeth in place to support the partial.
For patients who desire the ability to remove their new “teeth”, this is the best solution for aesthetic improvements.
Partial DenturesThere are two types of partial dentures:
Removable partial dentures – For patients who desire the ability to remove their new “teeth”, this is the best solution for aesthetic improvements. For patients on a budget, this is also the most economical of the choices.
Fixed partial dentures – For patients that desire a permanent solution and do not want to have to deal with the special care needed for a removable partial denture, a fixed partial is the answer.
Before initiating the process, a discussion with your dental provider will help you make the best decision for your circumstance. Get answers to all your questions and the guidance of a professional.
Once the decision is made to move forward, the dentist will make impressions to try on and take measurements. These models will help in determining the correct dimensions to get the best possible fit and appearance for the partial. Several models and try-on appointments may be required before you and your dentist are satisfied with the result. Only then will the impression be sent to the lab for the partial to be made.
The lab will take a couple of weeks to make and return your partial. Depending on the type of partial you have selected, another try-on may be done before completing treatment. If a fixed partial was selected, the abutment or supporting teeth will be prepared for the final cement.
If a removable partial denture is being placed, the brackets supporting the partial are attached to the abutment teeth and adjusted for the most comfortable fit. Several adjustments may be needed, and it is important that all adjustments be completed by your dentist and not attempted by the patient.
The end result will be identical, as the gap created due to tooth loss will be filled with a prosthesis that matches the surrounding teeth. Caring for your denture is very important so getting accurate instructions and following them will provide you with many years of smiles and functionality.
